Spotted Handfish are called this because they walk on handlike feet. They are only found in the Derwent River, Tasmania. There are fewer than 70 Red Handfish and 3000 Spotted Handfish left in the wild. |

The Southern Hairy Red Snail is found in wet forests on King Island, Tasmania. Once thought to be extinct, it was found again in 1996. Under a microscope you can see thousands of stubble-like bumps on its shell. |

Forty Spotted Pardalote have twenty spots on each wing. They are one of Australia’s rarest birds and are only found in the south-east corner of Tasmania. |

The Pedra Branca skink lives on Pedra Branca Island, a tiny rock 26 kms south of Tasmania. They bear live young and can live for ten, maybe fifteen years and live in rock crevasses away from the wind and waves. |

The Weedy Seadragon lives in the Derwent estuary and near Bruny Island in kelp forests. It has a body resembling a leaf, which provides great camouflage. The Seadragon sucks it’s food through a long snout. The female lays up to 250 eggs which the male carries inside his tail until they are ready to hatch. Seadragons are very shy and if you see one you are very lucky. |

The Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle is named for its wedge-shaped tail and is Australia’s largest bird of prey. Their nest is constructed of sticks and lined with bark. It normally measures 1 – 3 m across and 0.5 – 3 m deep, and is usually in the largest tree in an area. |
